The Masquerade

This was an illustration I did for my Visual Critical Studies: Girls on Film class. We talked a lot about the masquerade and the idea that women are constantly performing different gender rolls given to us throughout history. I was inspired to do this piece when I came across the Moretta mask during my research. The idea that this mask was the 'epitome of feminine beauty' and the woman wearing couldn't even talk....it was astounding. This mask literally turns the woman into a doll....she has no individuality, no say in anything literally. It was just really appalling. I did a sort of fashionable rendering of this idea. I really enjoy this piece.

This piece was made in Adobe Photoshop and is 20in wide.
